Meeting Minutes - 2/21/07

 

 

In Attendance:  Don Hoopes, Bob Astarita, Russ Yurek, Dianna Skrocki, Rob Bailey, Mike Getz, Linda Heaps, Vince DiFatta, Tim Rickey, Mike Haslup, Joyce Goslee, Karen Sturtevant, Daryl Jenkins, George Dawson, Vaugn Kopek, Charlie Dawson, Karen Dawson, Doug Kopek,  and Jay Johnson.

 

President’s Report: Don Hoopes

*  The annual dinner will be held at Ripken Stadium this year on Saturday, July 21st.  The

    dinner and awards will be from 4pm - 7pm and then the game will begin at 7pm. 

    Tickets are $31 each which includes the meal, game and a hat.  Tickets cannot be

    purchased for the meal only.  The menu will consist of Italian style sausage,

    hamburgers, BBQ chicken, hot dogs, beans and more.  This is a rain or shine event.  In

    the event of rain, a make-up ticket will be given for another Ironbirds game, but the

    awards ceremony and dinner will still be held.  Those who wish to attend must let Russ

    Yurek know by the end of March.  A firm count must be in to the stadium by the first

    week in April.

 

Treasurers Report: Russell Yurek 

*  Current net worth of  81,496.33.

*  All programs are in good shape.

 

Vice Presidents Report: Bob Astarita

*  Bob informed the group of the generic registration form online.  This form can be used

    by all programs and works especially well for those participants that miss the program

    registration date(s).  A motion was made to stop using the current triplicate form.  The

    motion was passed to use up the current forms, but to not reorder them once they are

    gone.

 

Old Business

*  The minutes from the January meeting were accepted.

*  No current progress to date on the land acquisition.  The money is available for the

    2008 budget.

 

Program Reports:

Scuba (Mike Haslup) -  doing well and a class of 6 is starting at the end of February.

Girls Basketball (Linda Heaps) - had a great season.  Wrapping up with tournaments scheduled for the next 2 Saturdays.

Swim Team (Vince DiFatta) - Program is doing great.  30 swimmers are going to districts in Laurel.  25 swimmers are going to regionals in North Carolina.  Meredith Foster has qualified to participate in the Grand Prix of swimming.

Dance (Joyce Goslee) - Costumes were just ordered and they are getting ready for recitals which are tentatively scheduled for June 9th and 10th.  Some of the dancers competed a couple weekends ago in West Virginia and they received silver medals and qualified to compete in the nationals this July in Las Vegas.

Girl‘s Lax (Tim Rickey) - currently have 8 teams.  Opening day parade is April 21st at 10am.  Elizabeth Drew and Tammy Yurek have volunteered to represent girls lacrosse in the opening day fund raiser that will be combined with baseball and softball.  A request was made for field times at Highland at least 2 nights a week.

Soccer (Bob Astarita) - the girls team won the Valentine tournament.

Softball (Bob Astarita) - currently still looking for a chairperson.

Baseball (Bob Astarita) - George and Karen Dawson have volunteered to help Bob get the program back in good shape.

Wrestling (Daryl Jenkins) - tomorrow is the last day of wrestling for photos and they will discuss the end of year party to be held on March 8th.  Next year they are looking to have all coaches attend a 2 hour for 2 nights meeting with parent helpers in order to keep their wrestlers safe.  The program’s reputation is growing and they look to gain another 15-25 wrestlers next season.  They may look to start a “B” team as well as a “B” tournament.  They will start posting for registration in July.

Karate (Don Hoopes) - currently have 14-15 students.  Getting ready to test the purple belts to go to blue belts and the green belts to go to brown belts.

Afternoon Fitness Swim (Karen Sturtevant) - the program will start Feb.27th.  Currently looking for a lifeguard for Tuesdays and Fridays from 2:45 - 4:15.  The current lifeguard (Christy) will be leaving for another opportunity, but has agreed to fill in while the program is looking for a lifeguard.

 

Rob Bailey (Parks & Rec) -

*  The Northern Harford County Baseball League Team entry information is due by March 9th.

*  Rob needs the names of the coaches & supervisors for girls lacrosse practices to submit to the school administrators for use of the Middle School gym by March 5th.

*  The Northern Region Soccer League meeting will be held April 4th at 7pm in the McFaul Activities Center.

 

New Business

*  A proposal was made to start a North Harford Football Program.  Charlie Dawson made a presentation of the details of the plan including, but not limited to estimated cost, letters of intent, volunteers, coaching staff, field use and mission statement.  A hard copy of the proposal was given to each of the officers.  After questions were made and answered by the current chairpersons and officers, the attendees requesting the football program were asked to leave so that further discussion could take place on the presentation made.  After further discussion by the rec. council, a motion was made and passed to give a tentative approval for the football program with the following stipulations: 1) all recruitment for the program, if any existed, must stop immediately and 2) the rec. board will have the opportunity to do further research before the final approval including a discussion with HB Youth Football League.  After the board’s research was complete, a final approval was given and a North Harford Football program will be in place for the 2007 season.
