North
Harford Recreation Council
Meeting
Minutes - 10/21/09
In Attendance: Don Hoopes, Dianna Skrocki, Russ Yurek, Bob Astarita, Lisa Emge,
Jodi Woodard, Charlie Dawson, Dave Miller, Pam Farrell , Joyce Goslee, Tim
Rickey, Mike Haslup, Steve Jones, Bessie
Stanbury and Shari Otto.
* President’s meeting:
Looking for nominations for 1 player and 1 coach for the Good Sportsmanship
Award. Nominations need to be in by
Oct.30th.
* There will be a fund
raiser held at Broom’s Bloom on Monday Nov.16th from 4-9 to benefit
Paul Yanney.
* Don expressed his
appreciation for Mrs. Haslup and how generous she has been in working with us
for our needs.
Treasurers Report: Russell Yurek
* Current net worth of
$119,577.61
* There are a large number
of returned checks that need taken care of.
Russ will distribute to the correct programs.
Vice Presidents Report: Bob Astarita
* Still having a problem
with the grass cutting. The budget is
for the grass to be cut every 2 weeks, but this is not acceptable. It’s too hard to play games on the weeks
that they do not cut. Bob suggested
that on the off-weeks we use the rec. funds to cut when it’s an emergency. Don said other rec. councils were having the
same problems and that’s what should be done.
* The new Visionary
sign-up program is working out great.
Old Business/Committee Updates
* Land Acquisition: Tim has been talking to Chad Shrodes about
available land. Ideas of working
towards a “lease to own” or other possibilities to acquire land were
discussed. Another possibility would be
working with the High School since they are the Agricultural Magnet school and
we would look to share a piece of land that both the school and rec. could manage
together.
* Highland building: Charlie did research on a 20x40 shed. A metal building will cost $8500 plus the
cost for the slab and some grading work.
The general fund or future enhancements could take up that fee. A motion was made to approve a building with
costs up to $10,000 and in the meantime work on the permits and approval by
Arden McClune. The motion was passed.
Program Reports
Dance (Joyce Goslee) -
going well
Karate (Don Hoopes) - currently
has 20 students. Has been testing 3
brown belts to become black belts.
Basketball - girls (Steve Jones) - Registration
is light, but seems to be county wide.
Soccer (Bob Astarita) - going well
Wrestling (Jodi Woodard) - only 7
sign-ups at this time, but trying to recruit more. Don suggested to post on the marquis. Lisa also suggested that she add it to the middle school flyer.
Scuba (Mike Haslup) - has 3
students and should finish up early November.
Girl’s Lax (Tim Rickey) - North Harford
and Jarrettsville will be working together from day one during tryouts and the
rec/travel split. Peach Bottom is
allowing them to use the Delta Senior Center for indoor lax. There was a
request to change the older girl’s program to incorporate ages 13-18. They will try this for 1 year and then
report back for a final decision to be made.
Cheerleading (Bessie Stansbury) - just had their first competition. 10-12s placed 5th and 6-8s placed 3rd. They have another one on Sunday.
Lisa Emge (Parks & Rec) - we now have a solution to the outside
bathroom at the elementary school. The
bathroom has been re-keyed and a set was given to us. We can now unlock and lock the facility as we need it and monitor
during our events. On Tuesday, Jan.26th
there will be a budget meeting from 6-8 at C.Milton Wright High School. Bob volunteered to go to represent the needs
for recreational programs. Information
was passed out that she received from Catholic Charities on their Center for
Family Services/Foster programs.
New Business
* The cheerleading program
has reported an issue on their uniforms.
The uniforms came in late and are not correct. They tried to negotiate with the company for a refund, but have
not been successful. They have a lawyer
that has offered to donate some of his time to this matter. Bob suggested that they have him send a
letter to see what response that may produce.
They will report the status at the next meeting.
THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE WEDNESDAY, Nov. 18th, at
7:00PM at the NHES Parks & Rec. Office.
